Forum für Ernährungssouveränität
*English below*

Goldegg, 17.4.2014

Nyéléni Austria 2014: Another food system is possible!

Forum for Food Sovereignty

Goldegg, 17.4.2014

More than 250 people from all over Austria met in Schloss Goldegg, Salzburg this week, to discuss the future of the food and agricultural system and develop a deeper common vision of food sovereignty. The key outcomes of the meeting are the strengthening of the networks between consumers and producers, and a shared strategy for a different food and agricultural system.

An important part of the forum was the development of concrete projects and ideas along the lines of the five thematic axes: food production, distribution networks, labour and social conditions, the Commons and access to land, and the necessary political framework for achieving this. Over 20 projects are now ready to move forward!

The food sovereignty movement is struggling against exploitation of migrant workers in agriculture, and for a food and agricultural system that ensures fair working conditions and wages, and decent living conditions for all. At the forum much progress was made, and we strengthened our alliances with trade unions developed joint campaigns and strategies.

Many young participants at the forum are planning to start farms themselves, but access to land is difficult and making it almost impossible for them to farm. One outcome of the forum is to create a guide for new farmers and a matching platform for facilitating access for non-family members farm succession.

The Austrian forum is part of the international movement for food sovereignty. International participants from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Slovenia gathered inspirations and experiences. The planning process for a Nyéléni Germany forum was aso initiated during the Austrian forum.

The forum concluded on the 17th of April, the international day of peasant’s struggles. To mark this event, the forum held an open public event, and hosted an interactive “market of ideas” that presented the concepts of food sovereignty to a wider audience.
