Climate Change and Migration: Causes, Mechanisms, and Implications
Climate Change has become a major concern for the international community. Among its negative consequences, the impact on population movements is increasingly attracting attention of researchers, policy makers, and the wider public. Although there is a consensus in the literature that environmental conditions are relevant for population mobility, empirical knowledge in the field remains varied, patchy, and limited. This talk discusses the link between climate change and migration and explores some of the underlying mechanisms that moderate the relationship. A particular focus will be placed on the role of institutional, social, and economic conditions and how they influence the strength and direction of climate effects on migration in different contexts.
